Today, I am sharing an easy yet delicious breakfast or brunch recipe on the blog from Goa! Goan Patal Batata Bhaji with Puri | Goan Style Batata Bhaji is one of the most popular breakfast options that you’ll come across in all the local cafēs and restaurants in Goa.

The word ‘Patal’ literally means thin. So, Goan Patal Batata Bhaji with Puri | Goan Style Batata Bhaji is actually a thin potato-based gravy which is seasoned with mild spices and some curry leaves. It has a lovely, smooth and soft texture and goes best with Puri, a deep-fried flatbread or with Pav (dinner rolls).

If you’ve ever been to Goa, chances are you’ve enjoyed this delicacy as it is loved by the locals. You will come across so many cafes on every nook and corner selling it from early morning to late evening. There is no fixed time to enjoy this but breakfast is the most popular time and platefuls of this yummy bhaji literally sell itself! My husband, as many of you who’ve seen my earlier posts on Goan recipes would know, has spent a few years in Goa and absolutely loves his local Goan cuisine. And Goan Patal Batata Bhaji with Puri | Goan Style Batata Bhaji happens to be another of his favourites and he never misses a chance to request for some at home too!

Some other yummy Goan fare includes
Bolinhas (coconut cookies)
Goan Chutney Sandwiches
Goan Forminhas
Beetroot Cutlets
French Beans Foogath
Serradura (Sawdust Pudding)
Homemade Pav (dinner rolls)

Many would love this bhaji with Pav, but we love it with some piping hot, fluffy and melt in the mouth puris/ pooris! Probably the North Indian in us but all the way back in Goa too, people love mopping up this bhaji with some puris just as much as they love it with Pav or sliced bread!

Add chopped coriander leaves and mix well. Turn off the flame and serve it piping hot with any bread of your choice.

For the Puri

Take atta (whole-wheat) flour in a large bowl, add salt and oil. Mix well.

Adding a little water at a time, make a semi-soft dough. Smoothen the dough with some more oil. Let the prepped dough rest for 30 minutes.

Keep oil to heat in a large wok to fry these puris.

Make small lemon sized balls of the dough. Roll out each ball to an approximate diameter 3-4″ and not too thick.

Make sure the oil is very hot, reduce the heat to medium-high flame. Start frying 1-2 puris at a time. Drain the puris on a kitchen tissue. Serve them hot with the Patal Batata Bhaji.
