How to make Pickled Red Onions | Sirke Wale Pyaaz is a very versatile condiment used as a salad or as a topping across all cuisines. It added zing and tang to any dish you add it to. Many enjoy it as a salad in India along with North Indian and Mughlai Cuisines, they are served as ‘sirke wale pyaaz’, which translates to vinegar onions. A bite of these onions with some Amritsari Stuffed Kulcha and Dal Makhani is just bliss! There’s a burst of flavours and we Indians love our ‘sirke wale pyaaz’. These pickled onions are added to spicy Indian rolls commonly known as Frankies. Frankies are popular street food across India that are stuffed with various spicy and flavoursome veg or non-veg filling.

Not only for rolls and wraps but these pickled onions can be used with Mediterranean cuisine too. Add them to your favourite Chickpea Salad or as a side to your next Hummus and Pita feast!

You can add these onions in burgers, wraps, salads, tacos, shawarmas, chutneys, quesadillas or just about anything!! Absolutely versatile condiment, these How to make Pickled Red Onions | Sirke Wale Pyaaz that can be prepped in just 10 minutes. These keep fresh in the refrigerator for about 7-8 days if stored in a glass/ porcelain jar. Do not store them in a plastic box or stainless box.

We need just a handful of ingredients for making these and less than 15 minutes of your time! That’s it! I make it very often and love it with literally with all my meals.

Let us make a batch, you can always double or triple the quantities depending on your requirements.

In a large saucepan, add water and vinegar. Add sugar and salt. Mix well. Let these simmer for 2 minutes.

Next, add the whole spices and the beets. Boil this concoction for about 5-7 minutes on medium flame.

Once it comes to a rolling boil, turn off the flame. Let the concoction come to room temperature.

Pour it over the pearl onions (shallots) in a glass bottle/ jar/ bowl and let the onions steep in this concoction for a complete day in the refrigerator before you consume them for the best taste.

This stays fresh for 7-8 days in a glass or porcelain jar.

How to make Pickled Red Onions | Sirke Wale Pyaaz is an easy to make and very delicious accompaniment/ condiment to any meal. It is Vegan and Glutenfree. It needs very few ingredients and comes together really quickly.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup plain water
  • 2 slices beetroot
  • 1 cup white vinegar
  • 2 nos. black cardamom
  • 2-3 nos. bay leaves
  • 7-8 nos. peppercorns
  • 2" piece cinnamon stick
  • 1 nos. star anise
  • 2 nos. cloves
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 200 gms pearl onions shallots

Instructions

Recipe Notes

In case you don't find shallots or pearl onions, use regular red onions. Just cut them into large quarters and follow the recipe.
